Professional Development

Turning Point is able to provide fee for service training in a range of areas including; Introduction to dealing with Alcohol and Drug issues (for secondary schools, tertiary institutions, workplaces and allied health professionals), Assessment, Treatment and Referral for AOD problems, Young People and AOD issues, Pharmacotherapy, Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health Assessment and Treatment for AOD clinicians, Understanding and treating Methamphetamine users and other topics by negotiation.

In addition to fee for service training, Turning Point is also delivering a Training Calendar, with workshops scheduled throughout the year and advertised below. These workshops are available to the AOD sector, other allied health professionals and/or community groups. The workshops will run from Turning Point’s training room in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne.

Training Calendar

February – June 2016

Turning Point is offering a range of workshops and seminars across 2016 to support professional development, contribute to workforce sustainability and strengthen evidence based practice. The workshops are facilitated by specialists in their field who have both clinical and training expertise.

There are nine workshops across the first half of 2016 which are either half day or one day. The one day workshop topics include understanding Aboriginal mental health – part 2, cannabis facts and evidence based interventions, understanding and treating people with a diagnosis of BPD, adolescent AOD use, alcohol and drug use and sleep, settlement trauma and addiction and working with refugee related trauma. The half day workshops include up to date hepatitis C information and basic effects of drug use on pregnancy, breast feeding and managing risks.

The training is relevant to those working in the AOD sector, allied health professionals including nurses, psychologists, social workers, welfare workers and also school teachers.

  • Friday 6th May 2016 9:30am – 4:30pm

    This workshop is facilitated by Foundation House and is for those working in counselling roles in the alcohol and other drugs sector. It focusses on theory and frameworks that underpin working with refugee related trauma and includes strategies for engagement, approaches to assessment and dealing with symptoms and challenging presentations (Settlement, Trauma and Addiction is a pre-requisite for this workshop).

    This one day seminar is designed for teachers, nurses, welfare coordinators and other professionals seeking to understand and respond to adolescent alcohol and drug use.
