Talking Point: Relapse in Electronic Gaming Machine Gambling

Dr Jane Oakes will be the speaker at the next Talking Point seminar on Wednesday 25 March.

The topic for discussion will be Relapse in Electronic Gaming Machine Gambling.

Jane is the Gambling Services Co-ordinator for Turning Point’s Telephone and Online Services and has previously held senior positions at the Statewide Gambling Service and Flinders University. This has included roles  as senior clinician, training coordinator and lecturer. She has  expertise in using CBT for the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression and problem gambling. She has a keen interest in the treatment of problem gambling and has  published articles and given invited presentations and workshops in this area both nationally and internationally. Her  PhD examined relapse in Electronic Gaming Machine Gambling.

This presentation will describe results from a qualitative study which investigated the phenomenon of the relapse process in problem gambling as perceived from a number of subjective perspectives. This study provides new knowledge regarding the risk factors and processes in gambling relapse and  provides a framework for conceptualising relapse described as the “push” towards relapse and the “pull” away from relapse.
