SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject will introduce students to the principles of counselling in the AOD field. It will familiarise them with the basic theories and principles of AOD counselling, specifically the Model of Change and Motivational Interviewing and allow them to build upon the counselling skills they currently possess by equipping them with techniques and strategies appropriate for working with AOD clients.
Students will gain knowledge of the principles and strategies associated with relapse prevention. They will also become familiar with tools and interventions appropriate for working with clients who may exhibit ambivalence or resistance to the counselling process.
SUBJECT/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate the way that the model of change can be utilised when working with clients with AOD issues;
- Identify and apply the principles of Motivational Interviewing;
- Demonstrate the micro skills utilised in Motivational Interviewing;
- Describe the principles of Relapse Prevention and be able to formulate relapse prevention strategies;
- Utilise counselling skills and techniques that are appropriate when working with ambivalent or resistant clients.
ASSESSMENT:
Hurdle requirement
- 100% attendance and satisfactory participation in class discussion and skills rehearsal
Assessment
- A 30 minute Video Tape of a counselling session submitted with a 2000 word assignment which will contain:
- A discussion and microanalysis of the techniques used in the counselling session; and
- A discussion of the relapse prevention techniques that would be appropriate for your client and a rationale for each.
