SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject explores the broad spectrum of drug use among young people and highlights the many factors, which influence this use. Students will be asked to consider how the changing nature of youth, societal values, the media and globalisation impact on youth drug use. They will look at national and international research and consider the relevance of the normalisation thesis for Australia's youth.
The major theories of adolescent development will be discussed and students will be asked to and consider whether these models provide an adequate framework for understanding contemporary youth drug use.
Particular attention is given to examining the approaches, which guide the prevention agenda in relation to young people, nationally, such as the risk and protective factors framework, the structural determinants of youth drug use, and the modified stress model.
Students will be given the opportunity to see how these theories are transferred into practise when a range of universal, selective and indicated interventions which aim to prevent the uptake of drug use and or reduce the harms associated with that use are explored in more detail.
SUBJECT/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this subject, students should be able to:
- Briefly describe theories of adolescent development and their relationship to drug use.
- Critically analyse the 'Normalisation Thesis'.
- Utilise the risk and protective factor framework to predict potential harms and identify appropriate interventions
- Evaluate of a key prevention initiative
- Discuss how macro and environmental factors impact on youth drug use
- Describe the range of youth treatment services
- Synthesise the information available on risky or 'binge drinking' in order to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of this issue and the need for a comprehensive approach.
- Construct a detailed report on the issues surrounding drug use within a specific group of young people (eg those with dual diagnosis, from a NESB, involved with the criminal justice, etc)
ASSESSMENT:
- Take Home Exam (approximately 1000 words) 20%
- Class presentation and supporting notes 10%
- Assignment (2000 word) 70%
