SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This unit will involve didactic and experiential approaches to learning Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Content will include an overview of SFBT theory, its origins and historical context, and its application to AOD treatment populations. Students will be trained in SFBT interventions and a clinical map provided to assist students through this process. Solution-focused interventions include Exceptions, the Miracle Question, and Scaling techniques. Additionally, links and comparisons with Motivational Interviewing and other major therapeutic frameworks will be made. Emphasis is on SFBT application to case scenarios and on opportunities for video-taped skill development and practice.

- Examine theoretical understandings of Solution-focused Brief Therapy theory; in particular, its origins and principles underpinning application
- Describe and apply the primary interventions that signify the SFBT approach
- Describe and apply how questions in the SFBT approach are used to construct pathways for change
- Utilise SFBT interventions as they apply to AOD problems
- Examine the strengths and limitations of SFBT when applied to AOD clients
- Examine the similarities and differences of solution-focused brief therapy with other major therapeutic frameworks - e.g., CBT, Narrative and Person-centred therapies
