Certificate in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies

The Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies is a Post Graduate course and is conducted on a part-time basis over three semesters. Students will be able to complete the Graduate Certificate over one year, however may complete in up to three years.
It consists of two core (compulsory) subjects, GP012 - Perspectives in Drug Use and GP013 - AOD Treatment, Assessment and Planning, and a choice of elective subjects to complete the other 30 credit points. A list of the subjects offered can be found in the table below.

Course Objectives
On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies students are expected to be able to:
- Critically analyse drug policy and the impact policy has on workers and drug users in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) sector;
- Display an advanced understanding of the prevalence, context and consequences of drug use in the community;
- Demonstrate well developed skills to communicate effectively with a range of individuals, including those who use AOD;
- Demonstrate advanced skills in the assessment and planning of appropriate interventions in conjunction with clients who use AOD;
- Appreciate the special needs of a range of specific groups in the community, such as young people and those with mental health issues;
- Utilise a range of skills and effective therapeutic strategies in meeting the needs of those who use AOD.
top of page Entrance Criteria
Normal entry will require the student to have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. This could be a Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma.
Special entry
The criteria to grant admission under special entry are:
- Nurses who completed their RN nurse training prior to the introduction of degree courses; OR
- Other health professionals with training and experience in relevant areas, but without a degree and who possess appropriate professional experience and meet such other requirements as are perceived appropriate by Turning Point, may be considered.
Applicants may be required to attend an interview and would need to demonstrate to an academic panel adequate preparation to undertake studies at a higher level by providing written work on a specific topic.
Cost
The Graduate Certificate is a full-fee paying course. The total cost is $4,000
Credit Points
Students need to accumulate 60 credit points, which is the equivalent of four full-semester subjects, to be awarded the Graduate Certificate. Full semester subjects have a credit point weighting of 15.
Also offered in the Graduate Certificate are several subjects that have a counselling or experiential focus. These subjects are offered on a workshop basis and are equivalent to a half semester subject. Half semester subjects have a credit point weighting of 7.5.
