The Graduate Diploma in Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Studies is a postgraduate course and is conducted on a part-time basis over three semesters. Students will be able to complete the Graduate Diploma over two years, however, may complete in up to four years. It consists of two core (compulsory) subjects, GP012 - Perspectives in Drug Use and GP013 - AOD Treatment, Assessment and Planning, and a range of elective subjects. A list of the subjects offered can be found in the table below.

Course Objectives
On completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
- Critically analyse drug policy and the impact policy has on workers and drug users in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) sector;
- Display an advanced understanding of the prevalence, context and consequences of drug use in the community;
- Demonstrate well developed skills to communicate effectively with a range of individuals, including those who use drugs;
- Appreciate the special needs of a range of specific groups in the community, such as young people and those with mental health issues;
Then depending upon the electives chosen
- Demonstrate advanced skills in the assessment and planning of appropriate interventions in conjunction with clients who use drugs;
- Utilise a range of skills and effective therapeutic strategies in meeting the needs of those who use drugs
or
- Critically analyse research, modes of therapies, and practices in the AOD sector

Entrance Criteria
Normal entry will require the student to have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
Special entry
Applications from students who do not meet the entry criteria,
but have completed the Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and
Other Drug Studies and achieved an average grade of 'B' or
greater, will be considered.
Cost
The Graduate Diploma is a full-fee paying course. The total cost is $8,000
Credit Points
Students need to accumulate 120 credit points, which is the equivalent of eight full-semester subjects, to be awarded the Graduate Diploma.
The majority of the subjects are full semester subjects. Full semester subjects have a credit point weighting of 15, except for GD103 - Research Project which is the equivalent workload of two full semester subjects therefore has a credit point weighting of 30. Students who elect to take this subject may not enrol in any other subject concurrently.
Also offered in the Graduate Diploma are several subjects that have a counselling or experiential focus. These subjects are offered on a workshop basis and are equivalent to a half semester subject. Half semester subjects have a credit point weighting of 7.5.
