Enrolment and information for new students

Subject summaries and other course details for 2009 can be found in the course handbook.

Application and enrolment
Enrolment is by application on the Enrolment Application Form and payment of fees. Enrolment Application Forms are available from Education and Training Administration at 142 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Victoria 3065 or from here.

To ensure quality, each subject has a maximum student enrolment. If that maximum is reached further students will not be able to enrol in that subject for that year.
Details of enrolment conditions

Enrolment days
New students will need to attend an enrolment day. Ensure that you bring with you your letter of offer. The process for re-enrolment will include subject selection, payment of fees, taking of a photograph for your student card and confirmation of you subject enrolment. Please allocate up to two hours for this process.
Please note enrolment confirmation will not be complete until payment has been made for at least the first semester subjects.

Enrolment days for new students are held prior to the start of first and second semesters. Enrolment days in 2010 are:

First semester

Wednesday 17 February 2010, between 3.00 and 7.00pm
142 Gertrude St Fitzroy

Second semester

Wednesday 7 July 2010, between 3.00 and 7.00pm
142 Gertrude St Fitzroy

Recognition of prior learning and credit transfer

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Students can apply for RPL after being accepted into the course. RPL is available by granting credit for:

  • learning acquired in a ‘credentialed context’, other than a university or TAFE, such as a course offered by a professional body, enterprise, private educational institution, or by any other provider recognised by the university
  • learning acquired in an ‘uncredentialed context’, such as through work or life experience

Students should determine what forms and sources of prior learning Turning Point is prepared to consider when assessing entitlement to credit in a course. Following this, the applicant should:

  • complete an Application for RPL form detailing their prior experiences and how these relate to the subject for which credit is sought. All relevant details, for example references, course details should be included at this stage
  • discuss the application with a designated RPL adviser (usually the Subject Coordinator in the first instance) who will provide advice as to the probability of success of the application

Turning Point will endeavour to complete the RPL assessment prior to the commencement of the semester for which the credit is sought.

Credit transfer

Students may apply for credit transfer where they have successfully completed subjects (ie achieved a mark of 50% or above) at a similar level and standard in previous studies. Credit transfer is assessed on the basis of equivalence of learning content in terms of the curriculum, depth of study and credit point value of the previous subject of learning. For specific credit to be granted, a subject of previous study must be equivalent to at least 80% of the curriculum and credit point value of a Turning Point subject. The principal criteria used in determining credit are the standard and content of previous studies, the results achieved, and their relevance to the course. Credit will not normally be granted for studies completed more than 10 years ago.

Application for credit transfer must be made on the appropriate form (available from Student Administration or from the Turning Point web site at http://www.turningpoint.org.au) with supporting evidence attached, including:

  • certification of completion from the awarding institution or agency, and
  • a copy of the subject outline including subject description, assessment and weighting of the subject

Maximum credit awarded

RPL and credit transfer are not available for all subjects. Availability of RPL or credit transfer is listed in the subject summaries.

A non-refundable administration fee must be paid by the student for each RPL or credit transfer application.

RPL and credit transfer will not be granted for more than 50% of the course (ie, a maximum of 60 credit points towards a Graduate Diploma and 30 credit points towards a Graduate Certificate). Granting of RPL and credit transfer will be at the discretion of the Subject Coordinator and the Head of Education and Training.

Census date
Each subject has a census date. Prior to the census date students may withdraw from the subject or amend their enrolment. After the census date students will be deemed to be enrolled in that subject and will need to pay the relevant fee despite choosing not to attend classes and submit assessment items. A result of 'X' will be given for the subject not completed and cannot be changed.

Census dates will be no earlier than 20% of the way through the period of time during which the subject is taken.
