SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
Students that undertake this unit will gain a thorough understanding of the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of Complementary and Alternative therapies, along with an overview of those modalities commonly used within the AOD sector. We will explore the history of Complementary and Alternative therapies in the context of drugs and alcohol and the demand and evidence that exists for their inclusion in treatment. The focus will be on the integration of Complementary and Alternative therapies with Conventional practice to establish an openness to use whatever works well and without harm to promote collaboration and synergy in multidisciplinary approaches.

We will explore areas such as: Wholistic approaches to addictions; the Wellness paradigm; Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques; Meditation; Bodywork; Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine; Ayurvedic Medicine; Homoeopathy; New Age Technologies; Diet and Nutrition; Herbal Medicine; Body-Mind Medicine; Aromatherapy; Energy Based Medicine; Detoxification Techniques; Hepatitis / HIV; Self Care; Lifestyle and Health; Exercise and Recovery.

At the completion of this unit, participants will have a well rounded view of Complementary and Alternative Therapies in the AOD field, enabling them to make informed decisions about the integration, use and effectiveness of such modalities within their programs and organisations, in work with their clients and also personally.
