SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject aims to give students theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to plan, manage and evaluate group work relevant to the AOD sector.

The subject will be offered as 3 full day workshops staggered over the semester. This will allow students to practise the skills in their work environment and assimilate new knowledge into their practice.

Students will learn how to plan, run and evaluate group activities. An understanding of group dynamics and skills necessary for effective group management will be promoted.

Students will be expected to keep a journal of the group activities they are engaged in throughout the semester.

SUBJECT/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this subject, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the various purposes of groups;
  2. Develop a plan for a group that they will facilitate;
  3. Describe the task and maintenance roles that individuals can play within the group;
  4. Describe the skills required to lead a group;
  5. Critically analyse their skill level in relation to group leadership;
  6. Manage the group processes;
  7. Evaluate the group.

ASSESSMENT:

Hurdle requirement

  • 100% attendance and satisfactory participation in class discussion and skills rehearsal
