SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject is an introduction to alcohol and drug use in the context of public health policy, practice and societal responses. Students will gain an understanding drug use and the role that drugs play for the individual and society. It will allow students to access information about the various recreational drugs and their effects as well as the patterns and prevalence of drug use and associated harms. Students will gain an understanding of the history of drug use and policy responses, as well as theories of use and models of dependence.

The social implications of drug use and examples of public health responses will also be covered. Students will be able to understand the interdependence of research and policy development as these relate to the effects of drugs upon both the individual and society more widely. The effects of drugs within special populations such as indigenous people and people with mental health problems will be covered. Students will be given a variety of resources to enhance their understanding and practice in this field.

SUBJECT/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this subject, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of psychoactive substances in society and the motivations for individuals to use drugs
  2. Utilise resources to gain and understanding of the various recreational drugs and their effects
  3. Describe some of the patterns, prevalence and associated harms, of drug use;
  4. Discuss the history and models of drug use and how these have impacted on past and present drug policy and clinical practice;
  5. Analyse the nexus between research, policy and various public health responses to drug issues;
  6. Assess the outcomes of various public health initiatives in regard to drugs.
