SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject
explores the broad spectrum of drug use among young people
and highlights the many factors, which influence this use.
Students will be asked to consider how the changing nature
of youth, societal values, the media and globalisation impact
on youth drug use. They will look at national and international
research and consider the relevance of the normalisation thesis
for Australia's youth.
The major theories of adolescent development
will be discussed and students will be asked to and consider
whether these models provide an adequate framework for understanding
contemporary youth drug use.
Particular attention is given to examining the
approaches, which guide the prevention agenda in relation
to young people, nationally, such as the risk and protective
factors framework, the structural determinants of youth drug
use, and the modified stress model.
Students will be given the opportunity
to see how these theories are transferred into practise when
a range of universal, selective and indicated interventions
which aim to prevent the uptake of drug use and or reduce
the harms associated with that use are explored in more detail.
