SUBJECT/UNIT SUMMARY:
This subject
aims to give students specific skills in alcohol and drug
telephone counselling. Telephone counselling can provide immediate
short term support to those who require assistance. The telephone
may be the first point of contact in a crisis situation, during
which time telephone counsellors establish an effective helping
relationship to define the crisis and provide appropriate
brief intervention and referral information where appropriate.
This subject aims to give students an understanding
of how telephone based counselling differs from other forms
of counselling. The immediate nature of telephone counselling
and the skills involved in forming an effective helping relationship,
assessing the situation, providing appropriate brief interventions
and referrals will be explored. More complex telephone situations
involving suicide risk assessment and crisis intervention
relevant to the AOD field will be also be discussed. This
subject will involve both theoretical and experiential learning,
with students taking part in simulated telephone counselling
situations.
Students at this level are expected to
have an understanding of basic counselling skills and AOD
counselling.
