Professional Development Training for AOD Workers 2010

Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre has been contracted by the Drugs Services and Policy Branch,
Department of Human Services to provide a number of professional development training courses.

These are intended as a supplement to the competency based training and assessment courses provided
as part of the DHS Minimum Qualification Strategy. Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre staff conducting
the courses have extensive clinical and training experience.

What courses are available?

The courses listed below are face-to-face classroom based training in metropolitan Melbourne and/or regional Victoria.

Working With Groups

This two-day workshop is designed to introduce workers to the planning, coordinating and running of groups for alcohol and drug clients.

2 day metropolitan workshop

Working Together with Alcohol and Drug Issues in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities - TBC

This course aims to increase the AOD knowledge and skills of key members within CALD communities to better equip them to deal with the AOD issues within their community. Also to increase the understanding of AOD workers and agencies in relation to improving access to members of the CALD communities.


2 day metropolitan workshop

Skills-Based Counselling

*Vacancies are only available for the Overview of current counselling approaches in AOD session*

This three-day skills based training is designed to offer workers the opportunity to refresh as well as build on existing counselling skills and knowledge. This training will make use of clinical maps that allow for the integration of interventions from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy.

3 day metropolitan workshop - Fitzroy

Psychostimulant training for health professionals

This one-day course will assist health professionals such as medical practitioners, nurses, mental health workers and alcohol and drug workers to manage and treat users of psychostimulants (speed, base, ice, MDMA, cocaine).

1 day metropolitan workshop - Dandenong and Fitzroy

Pharmacotherapy training

This one-day course will assist alcohol and drug workers to manage and treat opiate dependency. Topics covered include:

- Why are substitution therapies prescribed?
- What pharmacotherapies are available?
- What is the successful formula for treatment?
- What’s on the horizon?

1 day metropolitan and regional workshop - Shepparton and Fitzroy

*FITZROY COURSE FULL*

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Training

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of the new 3rd generation behaviour therapies. This training will explore the six interrelated core processes of ACT and the core intervention strategies that have been shown to be useful with a range of clinical concerns. This training targets alcohol and drug workers with a willingness to engage in an active learning environment.
