City Council Alcohol and Drug Profile: A local area analysis
2004-2005 to 2005-2006
TP
staff: Sharon Matthews, Monica Barratt
Summary: This project analyses
pre-existing data, such as hospitalisations and treatment
service utilisation to establish patterns of alcohol and drug
use and related harms in the Banyule area, with a focus on
describing the demographics where numbers permit. Basic descriptive
statistics, drawn from data spanning the years 2004-05 and
2005-06 will be used. Analysis of these data will provide
the opportunity to determine the extent of drug related use
and harm in Banyule area and to provide age and sex breakdowns.
This information will provide an evidence base to inform policy
and planning at the local area level.

Ecstasy
and related drugs reporting system (EDRS)
TP Staff: Brendan Quinn, Heidi
Strickland, Brian Smith
Summary: The aims of the EDRS
include to examine patterns of ERD use and ERD markets and
to identify emerging trends in the ERD market that may require
further investigation.
The three main sources of information are used in the EDRS:
1. Interviews with regular ecstasy users;
2. Interviews with “key experts” who, through
their work, have regular contact with ecstasy users in Melbourne;
and
3. Indicator data sources.
These three data sources are triangulated, so that different
data sources are used to validate each other and provide a
more reliable indication of emerging trends in EDRS use and
markets.
The EDRS was conducted by Turning Point from
2003 to 2007

Illicit
Drug Reporting System (IDRS)
TP staff: Brendan
Quinn, Heidi Strickland, Brian Smith, Annie Haines, Sanja Pahoki
Summary: The IDRS is
a national illicit drug monitoring system intended to serve
as a strategic early warning system, identifying emerging
trends of local and national concern in illicit drug markets.
The IDRS consists of three components: interviews with injecting
drug users, interviews with key experts (professionals who
have knowledge of drug trends and/or regular contact with
users), and analysis and examination of indicator data sources
related to illicit drugs. The IDRS monitors market characteristics
and patterns of use particularly of heroin, methamphetamines,
cocaine and cannabis.
The IDRS was conducted by Turning Point from
1997 to 2007
