Alcohol and other drug use and related harm in the City of Whittlesea: A local area profile

Summary: This is a secondary data analysis project. Using several data sources accessible to the local area level, the main aim of the research is to determine the extent of alcohol (and other drug) related use and harm in the City of Whittlesea. Selected areas will also be included for context. The most recent year of data available will be used to calculate population rates and proportions. The research will be used to provide an evidence base to inform council plans and policy.

Bargoongagat case coordination panel review

TP staff: Sharon Matthews

Summary: The panel is designed to provide a forum for a range of practitioners working with complex Indigenous clients, where client cases can be presented, discussed, additional services planned for and allocated. It is not intended to function as a central intake or replace existing intake and referral systems within the Indigenous service system. Instead, it should enhance the capacity for agency’s to link with other providers and develop a more holistic service response to their more complex clients. The primary aim of the review is to determine how the panel is utilised in the early stages of implementation and to inform future program development. Using a mixed methods approach os analysing available data as well as conducting a series of interviews with those associated with the panel.

Drug use in the City of Maribyrnong – A local profile

Summary: This project uses a mixed methods approach to local area alcohol and other drug profiling. Using pre-existing data, such as hospitalisations and treatment service utilisation to establish patterns of alcohol and drug use and related harms in the City of Maribyrnong area, with a focus on describing the demographics where numbers permit. Basic descriptive statistics, drawn from data spanning the years 2005-06 and 2006-07 will be used. A series of interviews are also being conducted with key stakeholders with expertise or experience in the area of alcohol and other drug use or service and program provision. Together these data will provide a profile of the area which will feed directly into the local area drug strategy.

Youth drug reporting system (YDRS)

Summary: The purpose of the YDRS study is to enhance understanding of illicit drug use patterns among populations of at-risk youth. The YDRS study is intended to serve as a strategic early warning system, identifying emerging trends of local concern in youth drug use and related harms within metropolitan Melbourne. The YDRS study is also expected to provide direction for more detailed data collection on specific issues, and to better inform future policy initiatives. The study design and methods to be employed include surveys with at-risk youth, key expert interviews, and analysis of indicator data.

Banyule City Council Alcohol and Drug Profile: A local area analysis 2004-2005 to 2005-2006

Barwon South Western region Alcohol and Drug Profile: A local and regional analysis

Summary: The aim of this project is to provide an evidence base of information relating to alcohol and drug indicators across the Barwon South Western region. This is achieved by presenting analyses of secondary data sources to determine alcohol and drug use and harms within this area. This information can be used to assist agencies address the service needs within their communities; and to provide a baseline for ongoing monitoring.

Drug driving in Australia

TP staff: Jenn Johnston

Summary: This research was designed to explore the Australian community’s attitudes, experience and understanding of drug driving, including alcohol, illicit drugs and pharmaceutical drugs, with the ultimate aim of informing the development of effective policy and information and education campaigns in relation to drugs and driving. The methodology employed for this research consisted of three stages: a review of the literature regarding drugs and driving; in-depth interviews with 20 key stakeholders from the Australian drugs and road safety sector; and an internet survey of nearly 7,000 Australian drivers.

Ecstasy and related drugs reporting system (EDRS)

TP Staff: Brendan Quinn, Heidi Strickland, Brian Smith

Summary: The aims of the EDRS include to examine patterns of ERD use and ERD markets and to identify emerging trends in the ERD market that may require further investigation.
The three main sources of information are used in the EDRS:

1. Interviews with regular ecstasy users;
2. Interviews with “key experts” who, through their work, have regular contact with ecstasy users in Melbourne; and
3. Indicator data sources.

These three data sources are triangulated, so that different data sources are used to validate each other and provide a more reliable indication of emerging trends in EDRS use and markets.

The EDRS was conducted by Turning Point from 2003 to 2007

Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS)

TP staff: Brendan Quinn, Heidi Strickland, Brian Smith, Annie Haines, Sanja Pahoki

Summary: The IDRS is a national illicit drug monitoring system intended to serve as a strategic early warning system, identifying emerging trends of local and national concern in illicit drug markets. The IDRS consists of three components: interviews with injecting drug users, interviews with key experts (professionals who have knowledge of drug trends and/or regular contact with users), and analysis and examination of indicator data sources related to illicit drugs. The IDRS monitors market characteristics and patterns of use particularly of heroin, methamphetamines, cocaine and cannabis.

The IDRS was conducted by Turning Point from 1997 to 2007
