Earlier
identification of drug harms project (EIDHP)
TP staff: Several Turning Point
staff are involved in this project with Belinda Lloyd as the
coordinator.
Summary: This project aims
to develop an information collection system that identifies
changing drug use and practices in a timely manner in order
to prevent and minimise drug related harms to illicit drug
users and AOD service clients in Victoria. Turning Point staff
make monthly contact (via email and/or phone) with a number
of agencies throughout Melbourne to obtain observational information
on any changes to drug use and related harms during the last
month.
Start date: March 2007
Finish date: Ongoing

| GENACIS
Gender Alcohol and Culture: An International Study. Drinking
patterns, gender and social roles in alcohol problems in Victoria
- an international comparative context TP
staff: Sharon Matthews, Professor Robin Room (Centre
for Alcohol Policy Research)
Summary: The goal of the GENACIS
(Gender, Alcohol and Culture: An International Study) project
is to develop a better understanding of the patterning of
alcohol consumption and of the relation of these patterns
to problems in social relationships, particularly in couples
and the family, by establishing an Australian arm of the GENACIS.
These patterns will be studied in the first place in Australia,
using the data collected from a random sample of the Victorian
population; in the second place, the patterns in Victoria
will be analysed and interpreted in the context of findings
from comparable studies, through participation in the GENACIS
international collaboration.
Start date: November 2006
Finish date: December 2009

Identifying
local area community and gaming industry risk and protective
factors that impact upon the prevalence of problem gambling
TP staff: Sharon
Matthews, Michael Livingston
Summary: The objective of
the proposed research is to determine LGA-level characteristics
that are associated with problem gambling as assessed through
call volume to Gambler's Help and the prevalence of agency-based
treatment services. Data from Gambler's Help and the Problem
Gambling Services Minimum Data Set will be used to determine
the prevalence of problematic gambling by LGA. Gaming, licensing
and venue characteristic data will be used to determine the
extent that problematic gambling is predicted by industry
characteristics such as venue type, venue density, venue size
and gaming product offerings through multiple regression analysis.
Regression models will be enhanced by including measures of
community resilience as measured through indicators of advantage
and disadvantage (eg Census data, data identified by the Victorian
Community Indicators Project). Other specialist health and
law enforcement data sets will also be investigated. A regression
model will be developed that best predicts problematic gambling
by LGA. The variables identified through regression analysis
will be used to develop an indicator of community risk for
experiencing increased levels of problematic gambling through
a relative ranking or indexing procedure.

| Surveillance
of drug related events attended by ambulance in Melbourne
TP staff: Belinda Lloyd,
Paul McElwee, Annie Haines, Heidi Strickland, Shelley Cogger
Summary: The purpose of the
project is to maintain a mechanism for the surveillance of
drug related events attended by ambulance (both illicit and
licit). The surveillance of drug related events utilises information
derived from Patient Care Records. These data are routinely
collected by MAS ambulance paramedics in the course of their
normal duties. The project database contains de-identified
information on drug class involvement, demographic and other
characteristics of events attended by ambulance.

Victorian
drug statistics handbook (DSHB)
TP
staff: Several investigators analyse and compile
data for this project. Belinda Lloyd is the current coordinator.
Summary: The Victorian Drug
Statistics Handbook (DSHB) series is based on work funded
by the Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS). The Epidemiology
and Surveillance Program analyses a variety of data sources
and compiles aggregate data submitted by various agencies
as well as extracted from agency reports. The DSHB describes
the major patterns of drug use and associated harms experienced
in Victoria. The series has been produced annually since 1999.
