Evaluation of brief interventions (BIs) in primary care

TP staff: Bridget Roberts, Laura Sciacchitano

Summary: The purpose of this project is to evaluate the current use of BIs in Victorian primary health services and develop a model of implementation based on good practice. The project will explore which brief AOD interventions are being used in Victorian primary care settings (with whom and in which settings), identify gaps in the provision of BIs and consider any impact of inter-sectoral linkages and partnerships in the effective delivery of BIs.

Start date: 1 July 2007
Completion date: 30 June 2008

Identification of an AOD screening tool for the Service Coordination Tool Template (SCTT)

TP staff: Amy Swan, Janette Mugavin

Summary: Service Coordination Tool Templates (SCTT) support appropriate client referral by clinicians. The identification of an appropriate AOD-specific screening tool(s) for SCTT will enable non-AOD agencies to identify relevant client needs and refer to AOD specialist agencies. This will contribute to improved referral practices into the AOD service system and enhanced workforce uptake of technology-based referral processes. This project will inform development of a SCTT: AOD and further pilot testing. The SCTT: AOD is intended for use as a standard referral form to AOD agencies by other health and welfare services.

Start date: 1 July 2007
Completion date: 30 June 2008

Evaluation of hospital based withdrawal models

TP staff: Bridget Roberts, Janette Mugavin

Summary: Commentary from regional consultations conducted in association with the blueprint discussion paper identified that the medical complexity of clients was increasing and withdrawal was becoming more complex and time consuming. Service system responsiveness to the needs of clients with complex medical presentations needs to be considered in any redefinition of the role of community based withdrawal services.

This study will examine existing public hospital-based withdrawal models or related arrangements, and identify circumstances that necessitate hospital-based withdrawal for medical conditions. The project will explore costs (and savings) of hospital-based withdrawal, and advantages and disadvantages of each model (including client outcomes).

Start date: 1 July 2007
Completion date: 30 June 2008

Evaluation of the 'from Go to Whoa' dissemination project

TP staff: Bridget Roberts, Lauren Siegmann

Summary: 'from Go to Whoa' is a one-day interactive training package on psychostimulants, designed for health professionals and funded by the Commonwealth Government. Turning Point is disseminating the package through a train-the-trainer model. The evaluation will identify outcomes, identify learnings as the project develops and support their use, and describe a model for best practice dissemination of resources, training and capacity building materials across the health sector.

Start date: 1 July 2007
Completion date: 30 June 2008
