1 East and Wellington House

The Turning Point Addiction Medicine Unit (TPAMU) provides medically managed inpatient withdrawal and stabilisation at our 1 East and Wellington House sites at Box Hill Hospital.

Patients of 1 East and Wellington House can expect 24/7 care supported by a multidisciplinary medical, nursing and allied health team, overseen by senior addiction medical specialists.

1 East

1 East is an 8-bed unit where patients can stay up to seven days. 1 East provides high quality medical and nursing support for patients withdrawing from alcohol and/or other drugs. 1 East also has the capacity to manage patients with a diagnosis of severe substance use disorder or dependence, whose treatment may be outside the scope of standard community residential withdrawal. 

Admissions to 1 East include patients with:

  • comorbid medical conditions
  • comorbid psychiatric conditions
  • other complexities such as withdrawal seizures
  • dependence on high doses of opioids necessitating stabilisation with methadone or buprenorphine
  • dependence on novel psychoactive and synthetic drugs including cannabis-like substances, methamphetamine and GHB
  • transfer from high dose methadone (or other opioids) to buprenorphine, and
  • high dose and unstable illicit benzodiazepine use.

Wellington House

Wellington House is a 12-bed community residential unit that provides extended withdrawal support for patients requiring additional time to stabilise their physical and mental health. Patients are able to transition to Wellington House from 1 East, with the opportunity to stay for up to four weeks. 

In addition to consolidating medical treatment commenced in 1 East, the program for clients at Wellington House includes:

  • group psychotherapy
  • in house mutual aid sessions
  • life skills including financial advice, and 
  • physical activities.

While at Wellington House, clients are supported to develop their own recovery plans post-discharge and encouraged to attend counselling and mutual aid groups.

Clients seeking inpatient detox and/or stabilisation for alcohol and/or other drug addiction.

Referral requirements

Completion of either a face-to-face or telephone intake assessment plus GP referral.GP referral required. GPs are advised to download the referral form (PDF 320.39 KB) and return this to the fax/email number provided on the form.

Intake assessments can be arranged by contacting the Eastern Consortium of Alcohol and Drug Services (ECADS) central intake number: 1800 778 278. Alternatively walk-in intake assessments are available at the Turning Point Eastern Treatment Services – Box Hill site (Ground Floor, 43 Carrington Road, Box Hill).

Program duration

Up to 28 days

While we usually offer up to 28-day stay, our length of stay has been affected by COVID -19. For more information about the length of stay we are currently offering for residential detox, please contact our helpful Intake team on 1800 778 278.

Waiting period

Varies depending on program and volumes of requests. Referrers will be advised if waiting periods are expected to be over one month.
