Creating more inclusive treatment practices in AOD residential services
Don’t miss the new podcast from JOY Media's ‘Well Well Well’ with Turning Point and Thorne Harbour Health
"If you have truly inclusive practices, it's not just trans and gender diverse people that are going to benefit. It's everyone."
Team Leader for the Lived Experience Workforce, Blair Hill, and Senior Research Fellow, Dr Annette Peart, recently joined Thorne Harbour Health's Nic Robinson-Griffith on JOY Media's “Well Well Well” podcast to discuss new research about transgender and gender diverse (TGD) inclusion in public alcohol and other drug (AOD) residential services.
Drawing on professional and lived experience, they shared powerful insights about the significant barriers TGD people face when accessing AOD residential services and the opportunities for creating more inclusive treatment settings.
While almost all (86 per cent) of Victoria's public residential services currently support TGD clients, the research revealed significant gaps between organisational intentions and inclusive practice. Many services lacked comprehensive policies, training and resources to serve TGD populations effectively.
Despite these deficiencies, the findings also highlighted the potential for inclusive practices to create safer treatment services for all clients. We all deserve to feel safe and respected when seeking healthcare.
